e-learning platform for practitioners in safety profession

Overview

Problem

To grow as a practitioner in safety profession, earning certifications from BCSP helps. With no credible sources for e-learning and mock-tests, users gravitate towards non-credible sources to fill the gap. Current online available material does not cater to the needs of the certification and hence there was a need to help test takers with good quality material to prepare for the certification exam.

Solution

I designed a learning Management System with easily accessible study material. Module-wise videos with Subject Matter Experts teaching important concepts including features like practice questions and mock-tests for better practice for the certification exam.

Research

I began the research phase by conducting observations, followed by interviews and focus group and I also did competitive analysis to study what kind of products are out there.

Observation

To better understand the importance and impact of these certifications, I attended a safety conference in Chicago.

The conference broadened my understanding of the safety community and the importance certification plays in their life. I was able to talk to people who have earned certifications and some who were planning to. I did a few guerrilla interviews and asked them their motives to become Safety Professionals, their background, their current work, how did they study for the exam and so on.

Focus Group

I conducted two remote focus groups. One were people working in the Safety Industry in United States and the other were people working out the States. As the Company’s credential holders are from different countries like India, Dubai and other countries, I wanted to include them to broaden my insights.

Certificate Holders in the US

  • No online availability of study resources

  • Legible study resources needed

  • No Mock tests available

  • No classes to teach a specific subject

Certificate Holders worldwide

  • Expensive Resources,

  • Not catered to the specific exams

  • Language problems.

  • Employer pays for their certification

Competitive Analysis

I looked up other learning management systems related to occupational safety. There were a few like OSHA, but they did not cater to the needs of the BCSP certifications. I also check other MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) platforms like Coursera, Skillshare to see if they provide any occupational safety related courses and the features they provide.

“People are scared to take the test in English, they can speak basic English, but are scared to fail an expensive test. There is a huge language barrier. They need more practice”

Affinity Diagram

With the help of my other team members, I created an affinity diagram to better understand the current methods of studying and ways we could improve it.
